Sleep tracking accuracy and the evidence behind it
Winner: Oura RingOura Ring 4 takes accuracy 9/10 against the Amazfit Band 7's 6/10 in our scoring — the widest accuracy gap in this comparison set, and the core of what you're paying for. The mechanism explains most of it: a ring reads an optical pulse from the finger, which sits closer to a clean arterial signal than the back of a wrist does, and it doesn't shift position when you roll over.
Oura is also the only one of the two with a published polysomnography check behind it, and it is worth reading that paper honestly rather than waving at it. Chee et al. (2021, *Nature and Science of Sleep*) put an Oura ring against research polysomnography and an Actiwatch 2 across multiple nights in adolescents. The ring showed excellent sleep-wake accuracy — comparable to standard research actigraphy — which is the headline. But the same study found it underestimated total sleep time by roughly 33-47 minutes against PSG, overestimated wake after sleep onset, and had real stage-detection limits: it under-read REM and light sleep while over-reading deep sleep. That is a validated device, not an infallible one, and anyone quoting "clinically validated Oura" without those numbers is selling you something.
Our product data cites no published validation of any kind for the Amazfit Band 7. That is not evidence it is inaccurate — it means nobody independent has published the check, which is weaker information than a completed one. What we can say is what the general literature says about this whole class of device: the broad multi-device benchmark by Chinoy et al. (2021, *Sleep*) found consumer trackers generally good at telling sleep from wake and inconsistent at assigning stages. That caveat applies to both products here. If you want a number defensible enough to raise with a clinician, the ring is the only one of the two with a paper trail. If you want a consistent night-over-night baseline to spot your own trends, both do that, because trend detection is far more forgiving than absolute stage agreement.
