Everything else on this page depends on getting this right first. The Casper Original Hybrid is a complete mattress: 11″ of AirScape foam over pocketed coils, zoned so the comfort layer firms under the hips and softens under the shoulders, delivered compressed in a box. You buy it, you unwrap it, you sleep on it. The Eight Sleep Pod 4 is a smart cover that zips over a mattress you already own — it fits profiles between 8″ and 13″ — plus a hub unit that sits beside the bed, holds water and needs power.

So the real question is not "which bed is better." It is "do I need a new mattress, or do I need the mattress I have to be colder?" If your current bed sags, doesn't support you, or is a decade old, the Pod 4 will not fix that — it will precisely climate-control a mattress you should be replacing. If your current bed is fine and you wake up sweating, a new Casper will not fix that either, and Casper's own listing effectively says so: average cooling is the first drawback on its page.

The two can be stacked, and the geometry works — Casper's 11″ profile sits comfortably inside the Pod's 8-13″ range. But budget it as $1,495 plus whatever a Pod costs you plus $199 a year, rather than a total we can print, because half of that sum is a number nobody publishes any more.

This is the unusual part of this pairing and it deserves its own section rather than a footnote. Neither product is a current, freely-orderable line, and a buyer should know that before comparing anything else.

Casper has discontinued the Original Hybrid. As of July 2026 casper.com redirects the Original Hybrid page to the Casper Dream Hybrid, GoodBed lists the Original among Casper's discontinued models, and Casper's own upgrade guidance tells Original Hybrid owners to move to the Dream. What remains is Amazon stock — ASIN B085H9FBBP, $1,495, listed as limited quantity when we checked on 27 July 2026.

Eight Sleep's situation is different and, for a shopper, worse. The Pod 4 has been superseded by the Pod 5, which is what eightsleep.com's shop page now sells (Pod 5 Core at $3,298 for a queen). The Pod 4 is not listed there, so there is no brand-direct price to quote, and third-party listings we found disagreed with one another by more than a hundred dollars. We are not going to print a hardware figure we cannot stand behind.

The practical difference: Casper is discontinued but purchasable in a queen at a price you can verify in thirty seconds. The Pod 4 is delisted at its own brand with no checkable price. That asymmetry is why Casper takes the overall pick on this page, and it is a statement about buyability rather than a claim that a mattress beats a climate cover at cooling.

This is the Pod 4's reason to exist and it wins decisively. The published spec is active water-based regulation from 55°F to 110°F, independently per side, with Autopilot adjusting through the night off your biometrics. In our scoring it takes cooling 10/10. Nothing passive gets near a 55°F floor, and nothing else on this page lets one person sleep cold while the person beside them sleeps warm.

Casper scores 7.5/10, and its own product page is the harshest thing written about it: "Cooling is average — hot sleepers look elsewhere" is the first item in its con list. AirScape foam is perforated so it vents better than solid memory foam, and the pocketed coils underneath let air move, but that is avoiding heat rather than removing it. In a warm bedroom in August, that distinction is the whole argument.

On whether the underlying premise holds, the Pod 4's own evidence base points to Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno's 2012 review in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology on thermal environment, sleep and circadian rhythm, and Lan et al.'s 2014 study in Building and Environment on thermal comfort at different sleeping air temperatures. Both support the general claim that sleeping temperature matters. Neither tested this product, no published head-to-head between these two exists, and we have not run one. We will not quote you a degrees-cooler figure for either bed.

Casper wins this on the scorecard and on the logic. Support scores 8.5/10 against the Pod 4's 7/10, and edge support 8/10 against 6/10. But the more important point is that a cover does not generate support at all. The Pod 4's numbers describe a sleeping surface as a system, and on your bed that system inherits whatever your existing mattress already does. If your mattress has soft edges today, it has soft edges under a Pod 4 tomorrow.

Casper's build is a genuine design rather than a generic hybrid. The zoned comfort layer is firmer under the hips and softer under the shoulders, which is the geometry a side sleeper's shoulder-to-waist profile asks for, and Casper targets side sleepers in the 130-200 lb band specifically. At 6/10 it is a true medium — pressure relief without the full memory-foam sink — and it is the single reason people still hunt down remaining stock of a discontinued model.

Motion isolation goes to Casper too, 7.5/10 against 7/10, though neither is a standout and the same inheritance caveat applies to the Pod's figure. If a restless partner is what wakes you, an all-foam mattress beats both of these; neither is the category answer.

We can only do half of this arithmetic honestly, and that is itself the finding. Casper Original Hybrid: **$1,495 once, $0 recurring**, so $1,495 is also the full three-year figure. There is no app to gate, no hub, no account, nothing that stops working if a card expires.

For the Pod 4 we cannot quote a hardware price. Eight Sleep's shop page sells the Pod 5 and no longer lists the Pod 4, and the third-party figures still floating around disagree with each other by more than a hundred dollars. Check it at the seller rather than trusting a number printed anywhere, including here.

What is verified on the Eight Sleep side is the meter. Autopilot Standard is $17/mo billed as $199 annually, and it is required for the features people buy a Pod for — automatic temperature adjustment, sleep tracking, the thermal alarm. Over three years that alone is **$597**, before any hardware, and before the mattress the cover has to sit on, which it does not include. So the structural point survives the missing number: one of these is a single payment on a complete bed, and the other is an unpriced purchase on a superseded generation with an open-ended annual fee attached to a device carrying a two-year warranty.

Casper: 100-night trial, 10-year warranty. Pod 4: 30-night trial, 2-year standard hardware warranty (confirmed on eightsleep.com/warranty). Casper wins both legs, though neither set of terms is generous by the standards of this category — 365 nights and open-ended warranties are common on beds at this price.

The 30-night window deserves particular thought because of what the Pod is for. You are evaluating a temperature product on a runway short enough that you may not hit a genuinely hot stretch inside it. Buy in November, return by early December, and you will never have tested the thing you bought it to do. Casper's 100 nights is better but still short of a seasonal change, and its return process requires the industry-standard 30 nights of sleeping on it first, leaving roughly 70 usable nights of decision time.

The risk that outlives both trials is the same on both sides in different shapes. Casper's 10-year warranty sits behind a discontinued model, so a claim in year six has no current-production unit to exchange into and Casper's own upgrade path routes owners to a different mattress. The Pod 4's warranty runs out after two years while the $199/yr subscription does not — you are asked to keep paying an annual fee on hardware that is out of warranty from year three, on a generation the manufacturer has already replaced.

Uncontested, because only one of these products competes. The Pod 4 tracks sleep stages, HRV and respiratory rate from the cover itself, with nothing on your wrist or finger. We score its app 10/10, its insights 10/10 and its sleep tracking 9/10 — numbers you would normally see on a dedicated tracker rather than on bedding.

The Casper Original Hybrid is a mattress. It scores 5/10 on tracking and app in our system, which is the placeholder for "does not do this" rather than a criticism of the bed. If you want nightly data alongside a Casper you buy a ring or a band separately — a mid-range tracker on top of $1,495 is a few hundred dollars, one time, and it keeps working whether or not you are paying anyone.

Keep the gating in scope, because it changes what the tracking is worth. All of the Pod's data sits behind the $199/yr Autopilot subscription. It is not a bonus that ships with the hardware; it is the thing the subscription buys, and it stops the month the subscription does. A tracker you own outright does not have that property.
