Sleep tracking accuracy
Winner: Whoop 5.0In our scoring Whoop 5 takes accuracy 9/10 and the Venu 3 takes 8/10. Close, but Whoop earns the edge on evidence: its sleep staging has been through a published polysomnography validation (Miller et al., *Journal of Sports Sciences*, 2020), which is more independent scrutiny than Garmin's sleep algorithm has publicly received. Garmin leans on its own Sleep Score and Sleep Coach framing instead.
Where the Venu 3 pulls level is coverage. Nap detection is automatic and is one of the genuinely good things about Garmin's sleep stack — most wrist trackers only score the main overnight block. Both devices report the same core picture: light, deep, REM, awake, plus overnight SpO2.
The underlying sensing differs in one meaningful way. Whoop runs continuous, ECG-quality HRV around the clock; Garmin samples HRV overnight and folds it into Body Battery. If HRV is the number you care about, that gap is real. We compared these on published specs, third-party validation and our own scoring rubric — not on first-hand wear.
